Immediate sensory immersion, that now thanks to interfaces like the Oculus Touch controllers, there’s a new dimension. The simple act of looking around and taking in your surroundings, in Virtual Reality, is unlike anything else. Put on some future-goggles and you get to go inside and experience interactive digital worlds first-hand, man. It can be really, really, tempting to just pop a couple of rounds off at the guards for fun. While the approach does mean maximum points it does become somewhat sedate and there are times where there doesn’t seem to be much to do apart from paddle. Most of the time then you’re trying to stay hidden, avoiding spotlights by hiding in reeds – a lot of reed beds – or creating distractions by shooting fire extinguishers. Naturally there are plenty of ways to achieve this, which is another of Phantom: Covert Ops’ strong points.
There are 7 core missions which will grade you at the end, with a maximum ‘S’ ranking unlocking different missions in the Challenge Mode. In reality it’s all about being as silent and sneaky as possible if you want to achieve the highest rankings and unlock all the extras. When it comes to gameplay nDreams has continually said Phantom: Covert Ops gives you the option to choose either stealth or more direct action. Prepare for a good arm/shoulder workout as there’s plenty to do. While for the most part the rowing was well executed there were occasional moments where braking just didn’t seem to work, or the kayak tail got stuck and no amount of paddling would dislodge it. Nice little touches include being able to push away from a wall with a paddle if too close.
There are several actions to learn such as braking and hard turning yet they’re not that overly complicated to learn. Simply get a nice place to sit and settle in.Īs stealth is the key you don’t generally need fast, hectic paddling motions, gently sweeping at the water to move. Failing that you’ve always got a silenced pistol at your side that can drop all but the most armored of enemies. Granted, AI needs to be predictable and robotic for successful stealth to feel like solving a puzzle rather than just getting lucky, Sometimes just sailing by isn’t an option because an area is well lit or heavily patrolled, but in those cases there are usually highlighted objects like lights, radios, and fire extinguishers you can shoot to create a diversion and draw them away. Because of that imprecision it’s probably a good thing that, as stealth games go, this is a fairly simple and forgiving one. Getting the hang of stopping when you need to stop and positioning yourself close enough to a switch to reach out and pull it is not without its frustrations.
At the same time, in a lot of ways dealing with the inertia of your boat while avoiding spotlights and incoming enemy boats is like if Agent 47 were trying to be sneaky. It’s cool to build up some speed, then hold the A button on the right controller and dip a paddle to make tight turns, though it’s a little inconsistent about when you can just hold the paddle and when you have to push repeatedly. I ended up getting into it, though, even putting my feet up on a footstool to simulate sitting in a kayak (though this sometimes made it difficult to reach items in my lap). Propelling yourself through the water is pretty fun once you get over how ridiculous waving a virtual kayak paddle looks to anybody watching – picture someone doggy-paddling through the air.
